Auto Repair Manual - How to read codes (No Special Tools Needed)

1 Drive vehicle until it reaches operating temperature.

2 Stop the vehicle, place it in park or neutral and turn ignition OFF.

3 Connect a switch as shown in the diagram, (Click here for details) .

4 Turn ignition ON, the Check Engine Light (CEL) (Check Engine Light) will illuminate.

5 Immediately CLOSE the switch. The light will extinguish and then illuminate for one short flash.

6 Immediately OPEN the switch.

7 Read codes as described in the Code Format Description below.

Note:To retrieve the next code, close the switch and wait for the Check Engine Light (CEL) to flash once. Immediately open the switch and it will display the next 5-digit fault code.
Note 2:If you receive code 13231 or 12231 (no ignition signal), crank engine and re-test. If code dissapears, disregard code.

8 Press the continue button to enter the code numbers and get the code description(s).

Code Format Description

The SD warning light in the instrument panel will display the 5-digit fault codes as follows:

• Five series of flashes are used to indicate the five digit codes.

• The first digit is indicated by the first series of flashes, likewise for the second digit, until all five digits have been flashed out.

• A one to two second flash makes up each series with flashes being separated by short pauses. One second flashes make up the numbers, with zero being indicated by a two second flash.

• Each series of flashes is separated by a 2.5-second gap.

• A one 1-second flash, 2-second flash, a short pause, one 1-second flash, a short pause, three 1-second flashes, a short pause and two 1-second flashes indicates the code number "10132". Codes will be repeated after 2.5 second gap.
