Auto Repair Manual - How to read codes (No Special Tools Needed)

NOTE:

• To have a stored code the Check Engine Light (CEL) must stay ON with the engine running.

1 If possible run the engine, to bring it and the oxygen sensor up to operating temperature, then switch the engine OFF.

2 Connect an LED tester or Voltmeter, (Click here for details) to points labelled A and B on the diagram

3 Turn the ignition ON.

4 Codes will be emitted via the LED tester or Voltmeter.

5 Read codes as described in the Code Format Description below.

6 Press the continue button to enter the code numbers and get the code description(s).

Code Format Diagram

Code Format Description

• Each code is made up of two series of flashes.

• The long flashes indicate the 'tens' digits.

• The short flashes indicate the 'ones' digits.

• A long pause separates each code sequence.

• Code Format Diagram shows code No. 12.

• A series of repeating short pulses indicates No codes in memory

• If nolongflashes are observed then the code is a straight count of short flashes. i.e. 4 flashes = code 4.
