Auto Repair Manual - How to read codes (No Special Tools Needed)

NOTE:

• To retrieve the codes using the ignition key method, first rev the car to 2500 rpm (while in Neutral or Park), then slowly reduce revs down to idle.

• If equiped with automatic transmission, cycle through each position (Drive, Park, etc).

• If equiped with air conditioning also cycle that ON and OFF.

1 Turn engine OFF.

2 Codes are shown by the Check Engine Light (CEL) on the dash.

3 Turn the ignition ON-OFF, ON-OFF, and finally ON again.

4 Codes will be emitted via CEL on the dashboard display.

5 Read codes as described in the Code Format Description below.

6 Press the continue button to enter the code numbers and get the code description(s).

Code Format Diagram

Code Format Description

• Each code consists of two groups.

• The first group of flashes indicate the 'tens' digits.

• The second group of flashes indicate the 'ones' digits.

• A short pause separates 'tens' and 'ones' digits.

• A long pause separates each trouble code.

• Code Format Diagram shows code No. 21.

• Code 55 indicates end of CEL code output.
